Philips | Milliken

Milliken & Company achieved carbon negative certification for global operations without purchased carbon credits based on quantified emissions that include energy reduction, renewable energy, and carbon sequestration delivered by its forests from the respected Leonardo Academy. “Carbon negative” means we capture and offset more carbon dioxide than we emit. Milliken became the only textile manufacturer to achieve and maintain the Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and GreenerSM/Health & Climate Care certification in 2004.

The in-house forest management began in 1981 and today nurtures more than one million trees annually. This corporate passion for trees supports the carbon negative ranking and encourages the expansion of Trees for All. The initiative works to educate the supply chain, enhance communities, and reduce GHG impacts for future generations. It includes online tree planting opportunities; partnerships to nurture trees in the U.S. and China; programs to increase elementary playground safety; and recognition of sustainable actions.

Milliken decreases its impact on the eco-system each year. Since 1990, Milliken Floor Covering has reduced its environmental footprint by more than 85 percent measured in six key categories Landfill, Energy, Water, Waste, HAP and CO2. All Milliken carpet products undergo Life Cycle Inventories and Life Cycle Analyses against the ISO 14040 standard as a working tool to evaluate all carpet components and their impact on the environment.

Milliken Floor Covering leads the textile and carpet industries in waste diversion to landfill with zero waste from carpet manufacturing since 1999. Milliken & Company has reduced solid waste to landfill to below one percent worldwide. Milliken follows a Design for the Environment (DfE) philosophy, engineering all carpet products for extended life cycles and future renewal.

Milliken Carpet has reduced packaging 91% since 1991.

Milliken is a founding member of the USGBC and committed to developing innovative products that contribute to excellence in performance, design and healthy interiors. TractionBack®, a patented high friction coating applied to carpet backing, from in-house Milliken Research enables adhesive-free installation, thus eliminating VOCs associated with glues, primers and sealers to improve IAQ.

Milliken led the carpet industry by offering PVC-free carpet in 1986. This one change represents more than a billion pounds of PVC removed from the production cycle and ultimately from landfill.

To underscore its dedication to transparency, Milliken seeks certifications for operations and products. It has measured water and energy use for more than 50 years. All carpet products are certified to NSF 140, the sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard and to SMaRT, the Sustainable Materials Rating Technology.

No other carpet may contribute more toward LEED.

FORTUNE Magazine’s Best Companies to Work For has included Milliken five times.

The Ethisphere Institute recognized Milliken as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies and granted The Ethics Inside™ certification.

Milliken leads the carpet and textile industry in OSHA VPP STAR sites.

Milliken is the only carpet company to offer a lifelong flooring compatibility warranty for its modular carpet backings. The guarantee was introduced in 1994.

More than 90 percent of Milliken carpet products received the highest available rating by the CRI/GSA approved Appearance Retention Rating.
